The C.O.R.E. (Cooking Oil Recycling Effort) program provides an environmentally friendly
solution for residents to recycle used cooking oil. It prevents grease-related sewer blockages,
reduces strain on wastewater systems, and promotes sustainability.
The C.O.R.E. program was created to address a serious yet often overlooked problem in
our communities: the improper disposal of used cooking oil and grease.
When residents pour used oil or grease down the drain, it doesn't just disappear—it cools,
hardens, and builds up inside plumbing and public sewer systems. Over time, this leads to
grease blockages, sewer backups, and costly environmental damage. These blockages are
a major contributor to sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs), which can spill raw sewage into
streets, homes, and waterways with costly labors and repairs.
Purpose of the C.O.R.E. Program
The purpose of the C.O.R.E. program is to:
• Educate the public about the dangers of pouring grease down the drain.
• Encourage proper recycling of used cooking oil through designated drop-off locations.
• Protect infrastructure by preventing sewer blockages and extending the life of
wastewater systems.
• Promote environmental stewardship by reducing pollution and promoting sustainable
waste practices.
• Support alternative energy efforts, as collected oil can be repurposed into biofuels or
other reusable resources.
Who Benefits?
• Residents benefit from fewer plumbing issues and lower maintenance costs.
• Local governments save on sewer system repair and cleanup.
• The environment benefits from reduced pollution and a cleaner, healthier watershed.
• Future generations gain from a more sustainable and resilient infrastructure.
